Fiona Burgess
Animateur (Royal Liberty School, Romford)
Having trained at Central School of Speech and Drama, Fiona graduated with a First Class BA Hons degree in Drama, Applied Theatre and Education. Fiona is currently a London-based drama practitioner and has worked in the UK and abroad in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, retirement homes, community centres, art galleries, streets and theatres. Companies she has worked with include Spare Tyre Theatre Company, Brighton Photo Biennial, Centre for Children’s Theatre Development in Kosovo and Lingue Senza Frontiere in Italy.
Her practice is rooted in taking drama out of conventional theatre spaces and making participatory experiences inclusive and available for all, especially those who are socially excluded or vulnerable.
Fiona’s research interests include examining the interplay between drama, media and technology within applied theatre settings and how multi-disciplinary approaches can engage and empower participants.
After graduating, Fiona worked as a Creative Producer/Events Manager for the Centre for Excellence in Training for Theatre and currently works part-time for Spanner in the Works Theatre Company delivering drama sessions for young people with mental health issues at an Adolescent Psychiatric Unit. She has recently begun work for Gendered Intelligence to facilitate an intergenerational project using drama, photography, film and sound which will explore issues surrounding age, sexuality and gender.
