Children and young people in both the UK and Australia will soon be involved in a collaborative project created by C&T and Central Queensland University. In the UK, schools and colleges who are part of C&T’s British network of schools will have access to TreeMappa 2.0.
Using drama, art and new media to engage with local history and stories (indigenous, post-settlement and contemporary) children will work with artists, museums, pre-service education students and local community members to create and share their work, both live and online.
The project is called TreeMappa 2.0 because it combines many of the social and cultural aspects of the ancient mappa mundis (such as to be found in Hereford) and the user-generated content online resources (such as Photosynth and Google Maps).
You can find out much more about TreeMappa 2.0 here.

(left to right) Max Allsup (C&T), Amanda Frost (CQU), Paul Sutton (C&T), Sue Davis (CQU), Lyndon Davis (Gubbi Gubbi Dancers) and Kate Greenwood (Treeline)
TreeMappa 2.0 has been sponsored by CQUniversity, The Eumundi & District Historical Association and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council RADF fund. Tree Mappa 2.0 has also been endorsed by the Noosa Biosphere Cultural Sector Board.

Children’s Arts Award Pilot Success

Last week, C&T and students from Blakedown Primary School in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, attended the Regional Arts Award Children’s Pilot celebration at Birmingham Town Hall to receive certificates for successful completion of the project.
A collaboration between Arts Award, Telford Culture Zone,Worcestershire County Council, Bright Space and Birmingham City Council, nearly 1000 children, aged 7-11, have grown their creativity through the arts. The largest single group in the Pilot, C&T worked with 40 students from two of our partner Primary schools.
Each child completed a creative portfolio of evidence about

participating in arts events
exploring the arts
researching a favourite artist
taking the lead

The standard of work the children produced was exceptional and some of it will be used by the Pilot team as part of a national case study.
Children who participated in the project will move onto the bronze arts award at secondary school. The project has clearly helped the children build confidence in their own creative ideas, learn new skills and become independent, ambitious, cultural learners.
Find out more about the work C&T does with Arts Award by clicking here.

Through our work in Pimlico School, C&T helped children and young people from inner London to contribute to the UK’s biggest ever enquiry into the condition of childhood.
Using drama and digital media we helped young people express their thoughts and feelings about what it’s like to be growing up in the UK today. Along with contributions from children and young people all over the UK, these have been brought together into a major book entitled “A Good Childhood”.
The book explores the main influences affecting every child: family, friends, youth culture, values and schools, and it gives the facts on the state of childhood today. It has striking and imaginative proposals for how life could be made better for all children, whatever their background.
Paul Sutton, Artistic Director of C&T: “Too often adults talk about children - what’s wrong with them, what’s best for them - without talking to them. This book has the best pedigree: it’s driven by the contributions of thousands of children and young people, including some from C&T. We’re proud of their contribution to this book and hope it will make a difference.”
You can get A Good Childhood from Amazon .

C&T will be presenting its work at the prestigious IDIERI conference in Sydney, Australia, in July 2009. We’ll be sharing our research findings around our experiments with Nintendo Wii controllers as an interface between young people and drama.
IDIERI, the International Drama in Education Research Institute, is the pre-eminent drama education research conference, held triennially in centres of excellence for drama education throughout the world. Previous conferences have been held in Brisbane, Australia (1995), Canada (1997), the USA (2000), England (2003) and Jamaica (2006). This year’s event will be hosted by the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney , Australia. Download a flyer about IDIERI here.
The theme of IDIERI 6 is Drama Research Futures: Examining our past, critiquing our present, imagining tomorrow and examines the shifting conditions in schools and society generally. The theme begs a discussion of the current state of drama education, applied theatre and the future of the field.

C&T is one of 10 companies in England to have been selected to run research pilot projects to identify new ways of engaging young people in theatre for Arts Council England’s Young People’s Participatory Theatre scheme. The climax of the YPPT scheme was the Get In conference in Liveprool, 25-27 July 2008, which gave all 10 companies the chance to share their research findings to young people, arts practitioners and the theatre establishment. C&T took the opportunity to bring with us three 14-year-old students from West Yorkshire, some of the participants in our pilot project, +Verb. The conference was a mixture of strategic discussions about the future of youth theatre and the role young people have in the future of the theatre industry, as well as giving many opportunities to work with a range of international practitioners like Ish and Nos do Morro. Reece, Tom and Dalton particularly enjoyed working with Cirkus Cirkor from Sweden - take a look!
